모자란 맥의 기본 한국어 입력기를 대체 하기 위해 바람 입력기가 있듯이, 중국어(간체) 입력에 있어서도 기본 입력기의 모자람을 대체하기 위한 노력들이 이루어지고 있다. 유료 프로그램으로는 QIM이라는 입력기가 있고, 무료 입력기에는 Fun Input Toy와 SunPinyin 두가지가 있다.
일단 기본 입력기는 많은 한자가 부족한 것은 물론이고, 느리며, 이상하게 내 컴퓨터에서는 오류마저 난다. 그리고 내 이름 중 ‘烔’이라는 글자를 표기하지 못한다.
유료 입력기는 논외로 하고 무료 입력기를 이야기 하자면,
FIT (Fun Input Toy)
1. 병음 입력 뿐 아니라 Wubi 입력 과 Bihua 입력 등 다양한 입력을 지원한다.
2. 메뉴가 모두 중국어로만 되어있다.
3. 아이콘이 예쁘지 못하다.
4. 다양한 옵션이 존재하여 세세한 항목을 지정할 수 있다.
5. 병음 입력 시 해당 글자가 총 몇 개 존재하는지 표시하여 준다.
6. 영문변환을 CapsLock, Shift, Ctrl 등으로 할 수 있으나, Shit나 Ctrl 사용시에는 다른 단축키를 누르려 할 때에도 종종 변환되어버린다. (예를 들면 Ctrl +T나 Shift + Ctrl + Space 등을 하려 해도 영문으로 변환되어 버린다)
7. ; 로 입력을 시작하면 변환없이 영어를 입력할 수 있다.
Sunpinyin
1. 병음 입력만 지원한다.
2. 영어 메뉴가 존재한다.
3. 아이콘이 맥스럽다.
4. 일반적인 사용자가 딱 필요한 옵션만 존재한다.
5. FIT는 <와 >를 이용해야 하는데 반해, 병음 입력 시 후보 글자 목록을 화살표를 이용하여 옮길 수 있다. (랩탑에서만)
6. 영문변환을 위해 CapsLock과 Shift 를 지원하며 현재 중국어→영어 변환시에만 Growl 이 뜬다.
7. FIT에 비하여 조금 더 빠른 느낌이다. (극히 개인적인 느낌)
8. 오픈소스다
나의 선택은 Sunpinyin. 두가지 다 하루 이상 씩 사용해본 결과 Sunpinyin을 사용할 때 더 안정적인 느낌이 들었다. 더 빠른 느낌도 들었고… 그리고 FIT의 세세한 옵션은 외국인인 나에게는 대부분 쓸모 없는 것들이었다. 다양한 입력 방식 등등도 나에게는 아무 필요 없는 것들일 뿐이었다.

The built-in Simplified Chinese input method lacks in many functions and many characters. (It doesn’t have the middle character of my name : 烔) And on my machine-so far it seems to happen only to me- it crashes when I try to input the characters corresponding the pinyin ‘qi’.
Anyway, there are three alternatives: 1. QIM(Not free) 2. Fun Input Toy 3. SunPinyin
If I were Chinese, I MIGHT consider trying QIM and pay for it. But I am not Chinese, and it seems to me that those 2 free wares are pretty good.
FIT (Fun Input Toy)
1. Far from pinyin method, you have wubi and bihua method.
2. All menu items are in Chinese
3. Ugly icon. (I’m sorry, but it is true.)
4. Various options for showing candidate, menu bar and stuff
5. It shows how many characters correspond to your requested pinyin.
6. You can switch to English Input Mode by using CapsLock, Shift, Ctrl keys and vice versa. But Shift and Ctrl seem to conflict with other shortcut using shift or ctrl (IE. Ctrl + T, Shift + Ctrl + Space)
7. If you start your input with ; (semi colon), that pinyin will remain in English not altered to Mandarin
Sunpinyin
1. Pinyin input Only
2. English Menu Available!
3. Mac friendly icon
4. Less options available (just enough for normal user)
5. You can use arrow keys to page candidates while FIT uses < and > (only on laptops)
6. You can switch to English Input Mode by using CapsLock, Shift, Ctrl keys and vice versa. No conflict. But Growl Notification only works when switching from Chinese to English. (should be fixed soon..)

After spending each day with both IMs, I decided to go with Sunpinyin. Sunpinyin seems more stable and faster than FIT. And those FIT’s strong aspects (various options and methods) are fairly useless for casual usage or foreign users like me.
